Stick out verse of the day:
throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.
After reading chapter 4 of Ephesians it got me to thinking about another verse that talks about becoming a new person. It is often quoted so you may have heard it before.
2 Corinthians 5:17
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
Sometimes we think that God is going to do it all for us. That he will wave a magic wand and fix everything in our lives. Or we feel like if things are hard then it must be a sign from God that I'm not supposed to do whatever. However if you take both of these verses you will see that God gives us a new life but then we also have to take action! God doesn't just take over when you become a Christian. We don't become robots taking orders from some unseen motherboard. We have a responsibility. Part of our responsibility is to throw off our sinful natures! That is not a passive statement. Throwing is anything but passive!
Throw: hurl or project (like a missile), as a gun does
I did not make this definition up! This whole definition, missile and gun included, I got from dictionary.com! How fast does a missile go? How far? How much recoil does it cause? Throwing off our old nature is by no means a passive statement!
So what are we supposed to throw at missile speed off of us? It tells us later in the chapter in verses 25-31.
- controlling anger
- foul language
- anger (2nd time its mentioned must mean its important!)
- harsh words
- all types of evil behavior
What should our new life have?
- say only good and helpful things
- use your hands for good hard work
- give generously to those in need
- encourage those around you
- be kind
Seriously, which kind of person would you rather be? Which kind of person would you rather be friends with? My vote is for the new life person.
God gives us a new life. He gives us the strength and ability to walk in our new lives. Our part is to start the walking. Am I saying I'm perfect and don't do anything from the old life list? No, I know I'm a work in progress! And God loves me anyway! I do try to stay away from the old and reach for the new. What do you need to throw off?
