I want to share with you some of the artists that have influenced my art. Monet is at the top of the list. I know that sounds cliche because he is everywhere but it is the truth. Ever since I was a child I would see his work and be completely in awe of it. I always wanted one of his posters hanging on my wall. When I was in high school I painted a couple of pictures that I made up based on my memories of his paintings. </div>
<div align="Center">
I have always been enamored by colors. I even dream in technicolor :) </div>
<div align="Center">
As Monet got older his sight got worse. Which is why some of his paintings while being impressionistic still have well defined areas and others you can barely tell what they are. Here are some paintings he did later in life after he developed cataracts. He had surgery to remove one from his right eye. These paintings he did with one eye closed. The yellow/red paintings are from the eye with the cateract and the blue ones are from the eye he had surgery on. </div>

I do not have cateracts but I do have poor eyesight. I have to wear contact or glasses or everything that I see looks like the paintings above. I even have different shades out of each eye like the paintings above, just not nearly as pronounced as Monet's. Maybe that was one of the reasons I have always felt a connection to him. If I ever start to lose my sight and it cannot be corrected I will still be able to paint!</div>

I want to start putting up videos to help anyone who is interested in learning more about art. Today I am starting with a very basic introduction to sharpening a pencil. I hope that ya'll will stick with me while I learn how to make awesome videos! Please comment and let me know what you think and what you would like to see in the future! I would love to do videos that you are interested in!<br />

This applies in many ways to being an artist but what reminds me of this every time I paint is the palette that I use. For years I used a handheld wooden palette that had to be cleaned right after you used it while the paint was still wet and waxed a little to keep the oil from setting in.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjULa_WrzjuFRvYkUvePjsj7yyJ0LhY0ShKdaxrUgqCXn_mg03lw2LQf7wt0xGQqZgdgV-bkTEuG0sNq7zeX9BQX__RO8yUU_h0J7V_Rfce_PZsj7dAus6ycOnqPG6psYpV2WaRFUpRyVNW/s1600/12-09+005.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjULa_WrzjuFRvYkUvePjsj7yyJ0LhY0ShKdaxrUgqCXn_mg03lw2LQf7wt0xGQqZgdgV-bkTEuG0sNq7zeX9BQX__RO8yUU_h0J7V_Rfce_PZsj7dAus6ycOnqPG6psYpV2WaRFUpRyVNW/s640/12-09+005.jpg" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b>I had a tendency to get paint all over me when I held a palette! </b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<b>Why did I use it?</b> Because my first painting teacher required it for class and thought that it was the best choice. The only reason I remember that he gave was because it was a medium value (wasn't too light or too dark) and had a warm tone. Of course since he had been painting longer than I had been alive I followed everything he said without question. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoFFxPuCFk1WR4f5HDb9mSkh_7JyLHXA5Y7j08S5b1PvfQdQX8ZfNPcnWbc0Mz2xjrKzGZBI1ZcGa9yFN5Rrb1ejz5NZ0iAEBWgOGpSGE0JVCLNdJXiWoaQIOU0C2OCQ7Fw6J7q6Bs1uyX/s1600/12-09+006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoFFxPuCFk1WR4f5HDb9mSkh_7JyLHXA5Y7j08S5b1PvfQdQX8ZfNPcnWbc0Mz2xjrKzGZBI1ZcGa9yFN5Rrb1ejz5NZ0iAEBWgOGpSGE0JVCLNdJXiWoaQIOU0C2OCQ7Fw6J7q6Bs1uyX/s640/12-09+006.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b>My wooden palette will forever look like this! I didn't clean it off the last time I used it and so it stuck!</b></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<b>Why did I stop using it?</b> After I got pregnant I stopped painting for a while but not before I used my wooden palette one last time and didn't clean it off! So I have a palette that will have paint on it forever and ever. I have to be honest. I had done this once before and I scrapped off all the old paint and refinished it. Of course I will never go through all that again. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ53jP8f0ID4cYLBFTa5Laf8u2tl3QkB0QVDK-LE1dhH_QN6qmI4a5v5aqad2ZiIyTAFZQldrkhEhCPwwAsJXhFeLvgO1AfFKa1SAjVwONv904NCRz4CYFOXMGMH1bhhq8dsLzKX5w2D4T/s1600/12-09+013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ53jP8f0ID4cYLBFTa5Laf8u2tl3QkB0QVDK-LE1dhH_QN6qmI4a5v5aqad2ZiIyTAFZQldrkhEhCPwwAsJXhFeLvgO1AfFKa1SAjVwONv904NCRz4CYFOXMGMH1bhhq8dsLzKX5w2D4T/s640/12-09+013.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>What did I replace it with?</b><br />
While I was at Laguna College of Art I bought a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Masterson-Sta-Wet-Premier-Palette-airtight/dp/B0009INFOG" target="_blank">Masterson Air Tight Palette</a>. I think that might have been required but I don't remember. I used it for a long time to store my wooden palette. When I got back to oil painting after having my daughter I took one of my glass cutting boards and put in the Masterson palette. Now I don't have to worry about when I clean my palette because all I have to do is scrap the glass with a razor blade and I'm ready to paint! Another difference is that it is not a handheld palette. So I have to have something to set my palette on because it is to big to hold. I use an old tv tray table, it is a little bit cumbersome when I paint plein air (on location) but I would rather deal with the bulky table than a wooden palette.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmKTgERXNc7UvMzGB26LzmXsyrjfYk_lJX9UUXcaAdYbji_mrg2ptbzriCaklXmShMH4cEer4iZWVRP17z_ULT5BdCA7mqRba94Br_xTPFhWZRTQVA7nsmWqur60sluCVpoo5kr5RNBlg9/s1600/12-09+018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmKTgERXNc7UvMzGB26LzmXsyrjfYk_lJX9UUXcaAdYbji_mrg2ptbzriCaklXmShMH4cEer4iZWVRP17z_ULT5BdCA7mqRba94Br_xTPFhWZRTQVA7nsmWqur60sluCVpoo5kr5RNBlg9/s640/12-09+018.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Know Thyself</b>!<br />
<br />
Think about your personality and the way you like to paint. Here are some questions to get you started:<br />
<br />
Would you rather clean up after you paint or before?<br />
Do you paint with long breaks? ie. paint in the morning take the afternoon off and continuing painting at night<br />
Do you like to hold your palette or could you make your setup so that you can place it on a table?<br />
Do you mind getting paint on your clothes? (its easier for me to stay clean if I don't have to hold it) <br />
<br />
Don't just accept what someone else has said is the best and/or only way to do something! There are as many techniques and supplies to painting as their are different styles of painting. The possibilities are endless so don't be afraid to try something new!<br />

Hello Ya'll! This month is my birthday! A couple of years back we started "birthday holiday", which means you get to celebrate your birthday for 3-4 days usually with date night, girls night, family night etc. It all started with my lawful sister, Rachel, when she turned 30. Well, my awesome husband decided that the month of November is going to be my holiday! How did I get so lucky? The picture above shows my birthday card that he gave me on November 1st (my birthday is the 21st) Its so pretty I'm going to frame it! Anyways back on topic, the rules for birthday holiday are:<br />
<ul>
<li> every Thursday I get to pick my favorite restaurant (he actually outlined of my favorites but told me I could change them if I wanted). </li>
<li>This past Thursday I got a special treat instead of dinner. We went to Maxie B's in Greensboro. </li>
<li>8th-Red Robin</li>
<li>15th- Greek</li>
<li>29th Jacks</li>
<li>Plus I get a birthday dinner on the 17th of a surprise restaurant! </li>
</ul>
Now the PRESENTS! I get to choose how to receive them by 1 of 4 ways.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>largest to smallest</li>
<li>smallest to largest</li>
<li>pick each week (they are wrapped)</li>
<li>let me decide</li>
</ul>
I choose to let Brian decide! How fun is this? I can tell you its really fun and I REALLY needed some fun! I will make sure I keep you all updated on my presents because I know ya'll are curious what they are going to be! I know I am!<br /><br />

My second choice (because Brian let me choose what we would both be eating since we were sharing and its my birthday holiday!) is chocolate chip pumpkin cake with cream cheese icing! I have to try pumpkin everything! It was fantastic! It was like a pumpkin punched you in the mouth in a good way! Just kidding, it just sounded fun to say. The cake doesn't really punch you in the face but boy does it taste good!</div>

This is the view from our table. I loved the ambiance of this great little place. They have really gone all out and paid attention to detail for the ulitmate experience. Now if we could just replace all the Starbuck's with a <a href="http://www.maxieb.com/" target="_blank">Maxie B </a>I would be in heaven! Brian even decided he was going to buy my birthday cake from there too! Its going to be a whole month of CAKE!!!!! </div>

Don't you just love blue glass? I don't know what it is about blue glass but I think it is so purty! Its interesting painting it too. In most of my paintings I layer colors to mix them but with blue glass I pretty much only need French Ultramarine! Of course some of you may be wondering why its named wedding blue. Its because this is a bottle from my uncle Bill's wedding. It was a gorgeous wedding and their wedding party color was this beautiful blue! I just loved it! And it was such a happy occasion that I wanted to put some of that happiness in a painting.<br />
This painting is currently available on ebay. You can place <a href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/181007764165?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1558.l2649" target="_blank">your bid here</a>! All of my auctions start a one penny! <br />

Hi my name is Amber and I'm addicted to glass! Early on in my life I felt like I needed to collect something. I think a lot of us go through that. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I collected:</div>
<ul>
<li>Comic books</li>
<li> Baseball cards</li>
<li> Snoopy and his gang figurines (now I limit that to Christmas time)</li>
<li> Swarovski crystal figures (I only managed to get one of those $$$$)</li>
<li> Dishes</li>
<li> China (and yes there is a difference between dishes and china) </li>
<li> Handmade Pottery</li>
<li> Shoes</li>
</ul>
And I'm sure if I sat here long enough the list could go on and on. But do you know what I have found has been something that I have always collected? Glass. More specifically glass bottles. Which is why I have a never ending supply of bottles for my paintings!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghua-l4z7sGU1Tumz7YrU76TEEggWjW5H3WuoudDXmX8fTLnduIBaQoFSeuafcUmCe3QKeocF8OfkpqKiUfNCQ33iN770ic7FyZ2nj91VePJ4ze0Kot-GZQmOiDjTxDiC4M5lEjEgRsyGC/s1600/12-09+018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghua-l4z7sGU1Tumz7YrU76TEEggWjW5H3WuoudDXmX8fTLnduIBaQoFSeuafcUmCe3QKeocF8OfkpqKiUfNCQ33iN770ic7FyZ2nj91VePJ4ze0Kot-GZQmOiDjTxDiC4M5lEjEgRsyGC/s640/12-09+018.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It all started when I was a kid. Our neighbor was a junk collector. What he really liked to collect was bottles. He would comb the county looking for bottles. I, of course wanted to join in on the treasure hunt. I can remember digging in the woods under the leaves to see what I could find.<br />
<br />
There were all kinds of little bottles with slime inside that smelled like molded cheap perfume that my mom would never let me keep because there was no way she could get them clean. But my prized possession was a large Horlick's Malted Milk jar.<br />
My mom was shocked that I had found a bottle so big after Moose (our neighborhood "treasure hunter") had lived there for years and gone digging in those very same spots! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf7vQt0Lhgv5jnBdrRiHvjo0xWoYCpgV5eK8hG1LoxjuDTp8MYH4pCK9Y4z7aGIjqa9PS9_0pVye6a_gdn0Urf-PbxTp1Kp3ueFMM6QQpJIcMZgdCX4mB5YRBmWrzentgigH7ELSw2TIwc/s1600/12-09+019.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf7vQt0Lhgv5jnBdrRiHvjo0xWoYCpgV5eK8hG1LoxjuDTp8MYH4pCK9Y4z7aGIjqa9PS9_0pVye6a_gdn0Urf-PbxTp1Kp3ueFMM6QQpJIcMZgdCX4mB5YRBmWrzentgigH7ELSw2TIwc/s640/12-09+019.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
That milk jar was the beginning. Now I have 30+
bottles displayed around my home. I would probably have more but I'm
refuse to pay an arm and a leg for a bottle, it ruins the hunt. Part of
collecting is the fun of the find. Going down to the local department
store and buying something from China takes all the romance out of the
bottle. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh85e83XDq-W-pLQJLet23qtX9nq0y9v2DgsiGhcoKCp8-IVxblMHkhIDb83uN2A7SxkXQbMVsU9swPh713geBgUdMcPrzm-uAgSVwXklk4zkqBweNmQC3IdMjBeIu7OnHGY4MkoJ2_A1_B/s1600/12-09+020.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh85e83XDq-W-pLQJLet23qtX9nq0y9v2DgsiGhcoKCp8-IVxblMHkhIDb83uN2A7SxkXQbMVsU9swPh713geBgUdMcPrzm-uAgSVwXklk4zkqBweNmQC3IdMjBeIu7OnHGY4MkoJ2_A1_B/s640/12-09+020.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
Bottles need stories.<br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: left;">What were they used for? </li>
<li style="text-align: left;"> How many fun dates did it send a newly wed couple out on making sure the bride smelled of sweet honey? </li>
<li style="text-align: left;">How many sick children did it help see through the night? </li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Or maybe it was just sugar tabs touted as the new miracle cure!</li>
</ul>

Seashells....that I collected :)</div>

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I almost always do my drawing in <strike>light blue</strike> Carolina blue. I'm really not sure why other than I just like to. Maybe subconsciously I just want to give my Duke fan of a husband a hard time! (for my readers who don't know Carolina and Duke go together about as good as shredded wheat and coleslaw which is another story all on its own!) </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivMdDwr9Cw-Jxe7dBWzNbyNnvFxg12ShfjjyZnDEpo9gE5wHSQY9l9-LDprlx0WfkKL2I0cA9u0G6jPOEjImZEUj_ls6WoKQKutlDY_-FZ70ea1IrCBEnRKx-7bcGmNzLvWwDvcGX2mnFT/s1600/12-09+002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivMdDwr9Cw-Jxe7dBWzNbyNnvFxg12ShfjjyZnDEpo9gE5wHSQY9l9-LDprlx0WfkKL2I0cA9u0G6jPOEjImZEUj_ls6WoKQKutlDY_-FZ70ea1IrCBEnRKx-7bcGmNzLvWwDvcGX2mnFT/s640/12-09+002.jpg" width="480" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I don't mix my colors on the palette. I much prefer to mix my paint on the canvas. I have worked with pastels for years (they look like chalk sticks but they are actually tiny sticks of colorful joy!) at first I had the hardest time mixing my pastels on paper but once I got the hang of it I LOVED it! Now, I've just applied the same ideas to oil paint. It gives the paintings depth and movement when you mix on the canvas </div><br />

I love painting flowers in bottles and I have a little bit of a habit of collecting bottles. One of my favorite places to get them is <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Gibsonville-Antiques-Collectibles/100559746685531?ref=ts">Gibsonville Antiques.</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If your ever in Gibsonville, NC you should stop by and check them out. They have renovated an old mill and it looks fabulous!</div>

Super Yum Yum Yummy! While on vacation this summer we went to a fish place we saw on <a href="http://www.travelchannel.com/video/charlestons-frogmore-stew-12426">Man vs Food</a>. And let me tell you it was fantastic! My mouth waters every time I think about it. I'll never be able to eat at another fish place again! If you are ever in Charleston SC look up Bowen's Island. (thats actually the name of the restaurant) <br />

I don't know why I didn't post this before! It is a pastel painting that I did while on vacation back in July. I had all these high aspirations of running every morning and painting everyday. Well, I took a vacation from both! Apparently I love to shell and didn't know it. So I got up every morning to pick up seashells. I did feel guilty about not painting so I did one at least :)</div>

<div>
My daughter started kindergarten! Which means more studio time! Yippee!!! So I did my happy dance this morning and picked some roses and drank a whole lot of coffee! To all those out there that said I would cry when she started school.....you not know me so well! (said in Mr. Fudd's voice, don't ask me why Mr. Fudd I'm too busy doing my happy dance!) I'm thinking about setting up this Saturday at Gibsonville's downtown greens, every Saturday they have a farmers/crafters market. Would you come if I set up?!? :)<br />

Last weekend my sis and mom in law grabbed the girls and whisked them away to the beach for a day trip! It was so much fun I think we'll do it every year. You know any time I go some place I'm gonna have to find some place good to eat...and this time is was a fun place called <a href="http://seawitchcafeandtikibar.com/">"The Seawitch Cafe"</a>. The food was outstanding! We had the best fried pickles I have ever eaten. They used Claussen pickles...I never thought I would defect from my home state's <a href="http://www.mtolivepickles.com/">Mt. Olive pickles</a> but in this case I was happy to switch sides! They also had the best fried shrimp I've ever had. The breading was crisp and light not greasy at all. It was so not greasy it was weird! Fantastic food, our waiter was a little spacey but nice so I give it a 5 out of 5 star. My sis in law rated it a 5 star also! So next time your at Carolina Beach stop by <a href="http://seawitchcafeandtikibar.com/">The Seawitch</a>, its right down the street from the boardwalk.<br />

It was kinda cool to watch them make the donuts. He used long sticks to flip them and take them out. They looked like really long drumsticks. After they were done he would have probably a dozen on the stick and they just drop them in a white paper bag.<br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

I've heard people rant and rave about these donuts, and Rachel was really excited to eat them (shes had them before) so I was looking forward to these donuts all day! The verdict? I think that people that eat these donuts and stand in line for them summer after summer are all the victims of VACATION EUPHORIA!!! It was fun to go and participate in something that has been apart of Carolina beach for so long BUT I can honestly say it was the worst donut ever. Faith named them the "crappy donuts" as in "you didn't bring home the good kind (we also stopped at Krispy Kreme) you only brought home the crappy donuts?!?!" Sorry Britts but I'm going George Washington on ya, I can not tell a lie! :)<br />

<br />
At the end of the day we were sun tingled (slightly burned) and had full happy bellies, what more can you ask for! I can't wait for next year's girls day at the beach! Have any of you had the "pleasure" of eating at Britts? Leave comments if you think I'm totally off my rocker or I hit the nail on the head!<br />

It seems here lately everyone is having surgery. A couple of weeks ago my husband had his achielles tendon stitched back together and today my mother in law had a bone spur removed from her foot. All these hours of hanging out in the waiting room has resulted in a renewed interest in my sketchbook. I bought a new pack of pens from PaperMate Flair pens from Walmart. When life get so busy you don't have time to do the things you want, such as spending hours in your studio, then find ways to do what you want/need/love to do on a smaller scale. If you don't already know I loooovvvvvveeeeee color so finding these fantastic pens has been a life saver! While I love a good pencil, nothing gets my engine going better than color! I've been copying from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Bridgmans-Complete-Guide-Drawing-Life/dp/1402766785/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339587178&sr=8-1&keywords=bridgemans+drawing">Bridgeman's Drawing from Life.</a> If your interested in figure drawing this is a must have!<br />

This months <a href="http://www.southernliving.com/">Southern Living</a> magazine has an article called "Eat Your Way to the Outer Banks" by Matt Lee and Ted Lee (cookbook authors). Challenge accepted! Each restaurant will have a review by me and my husband Brian, based on a 5 star rating. I had no idea that I would be the tough critic!<br />
<br />
Our first stop was Byrd's in Kinston. The magazine suggested having a biscuit with pork tenderloin, cheese, and eggs....it looked cheaper to get the plate so I did and we just assembled our own biscuits. <br />

Now to the good stuff! When we were on our way to the coast we passed a place in LaGrange called Ken's BBQ that I wanted to try sooo bad because it was a hole in the wall and it was packed out! But we stuck to our plan and said if it was still open when we drove back through that we would eat there for dinner. It wasn't open. So we drove to Durham and had Pizza Inn! I haven't had Pizza Inn since I was a kid and it was AWESOME!!!! Do you see those pizzerts? LOL! We stuffed ourselves silly, my favorite pizza was the baked potato pizza. It had potatoes, bacon, green onions, and cheese! Yummy!</div>

<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
I've decided that I'm going to start posting things that Faith says here on my blog so that it will be easy for me to find later when I'm old and gray, lets face it I'm horrible about keeping up a journal! Tonight at dinner Faith was upset because she didn't want to go to the mountain house (because it takes so long to get there (3 hours)). So Brian says that I guess that means she can't go to the beach when we go either because that takes the same amount of time.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Faith- well then I'm just gonna barf up.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Me-What?</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Faith-I'm gonna barf up, (she then spells) B E E F spacebar U P. (she literally said spacebar!)</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Me and Brian are cracking up!</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Brian- What does beefing up have to do with it?</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Faith- Its when I have beef in my mouth and then I (insert barf sound here)</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Brian- Well then you had it right when you said barf</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Faith-Yeah, I know but I didn't know how to spell barf</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">

I got these fun bookends for $3. Which is more than I would normally spend because as my sister Jenny says, she's a cheapskate but I'm a cheap cheapskate! LOL. I couldn't pass them up though because my whole childhood I was obsessed with horses (and I now have a daughter obsessed with doggies). I did learn that Valspar makes the best spray paint! Be sure and just spend the extra money for it because it is totally worth it! So how do you think they turned out?<br />

This morning at church we sang a song and the lyrics say: I surrender, I surrender all to you. At first I could only think about not wanting to give up everything because its MINE. Until I realized surrender is like Faith's blankie a.k.a. Wawa, don't ask me she named it as soon as she could talk!<br />
She takes that blankie everywhere and it picks up dirt and grime and who knows what else. And she loves it no matter what even when its gross and stinky! She will even argue that it doesn't smell bad and I can personally atest that it has smells you don't want me to describe! Being the good mommy that I am I take the blankie and although it hurts her at first, when she gets it back she sooooo excited because its smells so good and is so soft! Do you see where I am going with this? <br />
Surrender is not meant to be a bad thing! Sometimes we can't see how good is it because we've drug something around and slowly gotten used to the stink! So what needs to go in the wash? :). Don't worry it'll smell good and be nice and fluffy when you get it back!<br />

I have to say that without my adoring fans, I probably would have given up tonight. But thanks to one of my most uh, colorful critics, I got off my lazy butt and went and painted. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSygmiW2yifjIcfTjnP6bmM6Ga5xb3uh6_K4A7X0zbNqeYx-U_jUfA1GrW8fOutOHFWdEdvXp43JKCpOa5SSViLuGa6nz8bSNKRPhL7YalY6DBZvpgFDa6cB4n5RzJoQ50bAG0K7PDQ3uo/s1600/dandylion2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="215" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSygmiW2yifjIcfTjnP6bmM6Ga5xb3uh6_K4A7X0zbNqeYx-U_jUfA1GrW8fOutOHFWdEdvXp43JKCpOa5SSViLuGa6nz8bSNKRPhL7YalY6DBZvpgFDa6cB4n5RzJoQ50bAG0K7PDQ3uo/s400/dandylion2.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Look how thick that paint is on the dandylion!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Back to things I've learned in the last 9 days of painting. I was explaining to a friend of mine today that I was doing a painting a day because I wanted to get back into habit of painting. And I felt like there was more to it than that but I couldn't figure out what it was at the time. Tonight I figured it out! <br />
#1. It requires planning! and I'm not a planner so its been a learning process.<br />
#2. It is reestablishing a painting habit. I don't like to go a week (or more) and not paint, but the last couple of months that what had been happening.<br />
#3. It gets rid of the idea that I have to have something "pretty" to paint. I don't have time to think about the "perfect" thing to paint. I have to pick something and get it done....so no procrastinating!<br />
#4. The past couple of years I've spent more time trying to figure out the business end of art and haven't had enough FUN painting! This year is the year of FUN! I'm painting because I love too, not because I'm trying to become a not starving artist :)<br />
#5. It releases the pressure in unexpected ways! A great example is tonight's painting. It isn't like my usual paintings. I started the painting 2 times and wiped it off 2 times. After the 3rd attempt, I started thinking what can I do differently? What can I do thats going to make me feel good? The answer...put a butt load of paint on it! Its good to do something different sometimes, it keeps you from getting into a rut. <br />

So what are you doing differently this year? I can see myself applying the painting lessons I've learned from this month to other areas of my life. I am following along with Dani Keith's <a href="http://danikeithdesigns.com/blog/">blog. </a>She is applying for a grant and is posting the answers to her questions and I thought it would be fun! So here is the next one.<br />
<br />
How did you get started as an artist? What events motivated you to start your company?”<br />
<br />
I started as an artist at a very young age! I started when I was 4, at that age everyone is an artist! Thats before you let the world tell you that you can't draw, or you can't paint. Thats when everything was free, free to color outside of the lines, free to throw splatters on your castles....more about that later. My mom still has a particular drawing that I did. It was of the family and we were all stick people but I got my dads eyes just right. See, he has a glass eye so they are slightly different from each other. I drew the glass eye smaller than his real eye (which is how it is in real life) and so mom says thats when she knew I was an artist! If you've read Dani's blog her mom knew well before her that she was an artist too. Somthing about those mommas!<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This drawing was selected for the student section of the Laguna website in 2005.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I drew all throughout school. I quit taking art my senior year in high school. I didn't figure there was much I could do with it, plus it was much more important to me at the time to get half days than to stay all day just for an art class. When I was 20 I started a community college in Hawaii (my husband was a Marine and we were stationed there) I took a drawing class just to fulfill a credit and I fell in love all over again! I had a great teacher, <a href="http://web.mac.com/snowden_hodges/Contemporary_Realism/Snowden_Hodges.html">Snowden Hodges</a>, who I thought could teach anyone to draw! I took as many classes as I could while I was there and of course thought I was an awesome artist....ah the pride of the young.<br />
<br />
Flash forward a couple of years and I started attending <a href="http://www.lagunacollege.edu/">Laguna College of Art and Design</a>. I had the pleasure of studying under <a href="http://www.lagunacollege.edu/faculty_bio.php?dept=5&facultyid=23&sub=4">Betty Shelton</a>. Who is an absolutely fabulous teacher and artist. I still ask her questions...and she still answers them (I think that is the true sign of a teacher! and I hope to be like her some day) Back to LCAD, I absolutely loved it! And I truly did some exceptional work while I was for one year. bum bum bum then I got pregnant. So I was an art school dropout. Thats ok though, Faith kept me from going into even more debt than I already had! Oh, and I love my baby girl! :) After having Faith I took some time off from art. When I started back up I thought I would sell art through home parties, kinda like Tupperware. It didn't quite work out but you learn more from your failures than from your successes! At that point in my life I felt like I absolutely had to make it work and it really sucked all the fun out of painting. Now, I'm at a place where I can relax and enjoying creating artwork. I'm not desperate to make my art sell and I love it! You may ask, what changed? In that time period I became debt free! Who knew that debt could cloud all your creative processes? While painting I would think about how I needed to sell it so I could pay off debt, or buy more supplies etc. Now I don't have to worry about that its awesome! So now I've got an etsy shop and I'm doing arts/craft fairs....and of course I'm always interested in gallery representation :) Amber Cauleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02020636734092407202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8433423203101478387.post-1891405618319986692011-09-06T13:36:00.000-04:002012-06-21T18:55:30.955-04:00Is summer over?I set out to take a break in July from blogging because I had so much going on. But then it turned into an extended holiday! (I know, I know I said holiday, but I swear I'm American! I've just been watching a lot of International House Hunters lately) Friday was First Friday in Downtown Greensboro. I've been meaning to post pictures of my booth with the lights on but this was the first time I remembered to take a picture!<br />

This past Friday I unveiled my newest creation, silhouette portraits on plates. The kids all loved the pink one because it looked like Barbie. Of course then there was the one lady that started talking about how our kids are brainwashed because they thought the plate looked like Barbie. I have to say that although I made the portrait up from my head I had her silhouette in mind when I did it.<br />
