No rest for the artist

I was really tired when I drew the one labeled for the 6th.  I forgot that I was supposed to be drawing myself every day so it was right before bed. The other one was done in the car.  The little girl is my daughter riding in the backseat.

So far so good!

So far this year I have been able to keep up with my self portrait a day.  Woo Hoo!  7 days down....ugh what have I gotten myself into?  I promise at some point I will do a self portrait that takes more than a day!

In Memory of Mackenzie Robertson

This beautiful baby girl belongs to my friend Natasha, who unfortunately lost Mackenzie to SIDS.  I have to say that this was the by far the hardest painting I have ever done but also the most rewarding.  I never got to meet her in person but through Facebook I was kept up to date on all of Mackenzie's cuteness and this was one of my favorite photos.

"Daddy please don't look so sad, momma please don't cry.
Cause I'm in the arms of Jesus, and he sings me lullabies.
Please try not to question God, don't think he is unkind.
Don't think he sent me to you and then changed his mind.
You see I'm a special child, I am needed up above.
I'm the special gift you gave Him, a product of your love.
I'll always be there with you, so watch the sky at night.
Look for the brightest star and know that's my halo's brilliant light.
You'll see me in the morning frost that mists your window pane.
That's me in the summer showers, I'll be dancing in the rain.
When you feel a gentle breeze from a gentle wind that blows.
Know that it's me planting a kiss upon your nose.
When you see a child playing and your heart feels a tug,
Don't be sad mommy, that's just me giving your heart a hug.
So daddy don't looks so sad and momma please don't cry.
I'm in the arms of Jesus and he sings me lullabies!

Military Wives

I have started a new series that I'm really excited about. Its called Military Wives. If you read my blog then you have unknowingly seen the first in the series.  "Don't Believe Everything She Says".
For eight years I was a Marine Corps wife and I had always wanted to paint the faces that stand behind our men.  I'm using my personal photos of actual military wives.  If you know of any wives that would like to donate their pictures please leave a comment or contact me at ambercauley@yahoo.com.

This is the second in the series I finished yesterday.  I love this one!  "Another Goodbye"  I snapped this photo the day my husband left for his second deployment.

I have one more painting that I am working on and I'm trying to rustle up some more pictures from friends of mine.  I hope to do more than 3 paintings but if I can't find the reference material then I will have to settle on 3, so if you want to send me your pictures I would love to see them!

I may be finished?

I think I may have finished this piece. I might have a little bit of ooddling to do but I felt like posting a picture so here it is! Sometimes it takes a while to know if something is finished or needs some more tweaking. When I get to a point when I'm not sure if it is done then I take a step back and look at it and look at it and look at it! I think that Brian thinks I'm crazy or maybe conceited because I'm always poking my head into my studio to check out whats on my easel. I wish I had someone around that would give me a good critique. This is your chance...what do you like, what would you change?

From the underpainting picture you can see that I edited a few things. I took out the back of the chair because it was so distracting. My eye kept going to that stinkin' chair. I also made her arm shorter. I worked on her face forever! I think I put it in and completely wiped it out about 5 times. I was really beginning to become frustrated! The good thing about all this, I'm getting my monies worth out of this wallis paper! Lacarte would have never stood up to all the abuse I've given this painting! In case you were wondering, this painting is based on a picture I took of my beautiful friend Betsey.

New Paper!

Friday I went to Raleigh, NC to take Faith to the Museum of Natural Sciences. It was free so if you ever want to do a day trip with your kids you should check it out. While we were down there I stopped by an art supply store...they are few and far between here in the Greensboro/Burlington area, none of which carry much in the way of pastels. I stopped at Jerry's Artarama and bought a couple of Unison pastels which I have never tried so I'm excited to use those and I got Wallis paper. I've never used Wallis before but I think it is going to be my new favorite! I started a painting today. I just have an underpainting down but I thought I would show it so you can see. The biggest difference between Wallis paper and the paper I have been using is that Wallis paper accepts water. Which is awesome! I put down some pastel and then went over it with some water and a brush so it looks like watercolor. I can't wait to see how this turns out. Unfortunately the longer I paint the more expensive my taste gets in paper. I had better stop while I'm ahead huh?

Brian watching TV

I did some sketching of Brian the other night while he was watching tv. He says they don't look like him but I thought they did some what. I realize that its not an exact replica of his face but that isn't what an artist does....thats what a camera does. What do you think? Does it look like him? Brian pointed out that his eyebrows were too high, which they are but maybe he just happened to see something really interesting on tv! We were watching 48 hours after all!

New Years Resolutions

These charcoal portraits are of some of my cousins in 5x7.

With the beginning of the new year comes the dreaded new year resolutions. Normally I don't make them because I know myself well enough to know I will not keep them...if I ever even start them. I am certainly smart enough not to make a resolution about what I eat, as I sit here stuffing my face with chocolate chip cookies! Here is my list so far!
1. Buy someone else's art. (I have a few in mind already) http://beckyjoy.com/collections/24428/?displayhorz=3

2. Buy all my bday gifts from www.etsy.com For those of you who don't know its a website dedicated to homemade and vintage items, its amazing what people can make!

3. Complete all of the Concept2 individual rowing challenges
www.concept2.com/us/motivation/challenges/individual/default.asp

4. Keep my studio/paperwork organized (HA HA HA)

5. De-wallpaper my bathroom and paint it

6. Spend more time with God, my family and my art...what a mountain I have to climb!
